Whether you’re hauling garden gear or moving house, choosing the right tow vehicle is critical. It’s not just about horsepower—it’s about safety, control, and legal compliance. Here’s what to look for.
1. Know Your Trailer’s ATM
The Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) is the total weight of your trailer when fully loaded. Your vehicle must be rated to tow at least this much—preferably more.
2. Check the GCM and Tow Rating
Gross Combination Mass (GCM) is the max weight of your vehicle + trailer + load. Don’t just look at the tow rating—make sure your setup stays under the GCM.
3. Suspension and Chassis Strength
Soft suspension or a light-duty chassis can struggle with heavy trailers. Utes and 4WDs are usually better suited than small SUVs or sedans.
4. Brake Controller Compatibility
If your trailer has electric brakes, your vehicle needs a compatible brake controller. Without it, you’re not just risking safety—you’re breaking the law.
5. Don’t Forget the Towbar Rating
Even if your vehicle is rated to tow, your towbar might not be. Check the compliance plate and make sure it’s up to spec.
